Mitochondria are little blobs inside your cells that produce energy that the cell can use from what we intake, things like water and air. They create ATP for your body to function. Our cells and their mitochondria are not a perfect symbiote, contrary to popular belief. Our cells can create energy without the mitochondria, but they have evolved so that they cannot get the resources themselves efficiently.
-Mitochondria’s abbreviation is “mt,” which would explain some terms such as mtDNA.
-There are about 1000-2500 mitochondria per skin cell, but higher functioning cells such as muscle and heart cells have around 5000.
-This may be obvious, but cells with more energy demands have more mitochondria.
-Found in all Eukaryotic cells.
-We humans, on average, create ten thousand times more energy every second than the sun. (I have no idea why nobody has yet made children farms... Excuse this.)
