Primary Mitochondria Diseases (Strong relation)
MELAS syndrome: (Mitochondrial Encephalopathy, Lactic Acidosis, and Stroke-like Episodes): This is one of the most common mitochondrial diseases, characterized by recurrent headaches, vomiting, seizures, and muscle weakness.
LEIGH syndrome: A severe neurological disorder that affects the central nervous system, causing developmental delays, muscle weakness, and breathing difficulties.
Kearns-Sayre syndrome (KSS): A rare disorder characterized by muscle weakness, vision problems, heart issues, and other symptoms.
MERRF (Myoclonic Epilepsy with Ragged Red Fibers): A disorder characterized by seizures, muscle weakness, and other neurological problems.
Non-Primary Mitochondria Dysfunction
Neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease have a link with mitochondria dysfunction, since mitochondria produce energy for cells and the cells will die without them.
Diabetes: Mitochondria "weirdness" has been found in relationship with type 2 diabetes.
Heart disease: Mitochondria dysfunction can contribute to degenerative heart diseases, since you know, they die and stuff.
Cancer. In many types of cancer, Mitochondria have been altered in many ways by mutations to help the cancer grow more. You may ask, why doesn't the body do this? Well, cancer merely wants to grow, while the goal of the human body is to produce more humans. Therefore, it needs more time to develop and to create a healthy offspring, and with attackers like viruses and bacterium, traitors like cancer, it needs to be careful and well-planning. However, cancer... can risk stuff.
